I have a very interesting relationship with Young Adult books. Sometimes I really love them, other times I completely hate them. I literally have a love/hate relationship with the whole genre. I think a big part of my problem with a lot of young adult books is that I often feel like they aren’t as smartly written as they could be. I hate the assumption that just because a book is geared towards a younger audience that it means they inherently aren’t as smart. This book to me suffered from that, it seemed like every major plot point within the book was full of trivial concern and lacked a lot of depth. So I actually kind of loved the premise of the book, the idea that a flu shot could give a group of high school kids ESP. I can easily see how it could open up a lot of doors, provide some comic relief, cause problems, and create solutions. There is just a lot that you can do with that idea within a book. Unfortunately the power was almost exclusively (in my opinion) used to get a boyfriend. And don’t get me wrong, romance is important, especially in high school, where everyone wants to know who is dating who, and your first heartbreak feels like the end of the world.
