Come to Me Softly by A.L. Jackson

So this book is a continuation of the first book in the series, Come to Me Quietly. I really liked the first book in the series, I remember reading it quickly and not wanting to put it down. Aly and Jared’s love story is not made of candy and butterflies, it’s definitely one of the harder romances I’ve read, but at the end of the first book Aly is pregnant and it seems like Jared and Aly have found a way to be happy together. But of course, it turns out, it’s not that easy. Jared is one of the more damaged characters I have read. He definitely has carries a lot of guilt within him as well as has isolated himself to the point where he really doesn’t have any kind of support system, with the exception of Aly and her family (and even that is tenuous at best). I liked reading Jared, and in a lot of ways I felt like this book, and this series is way more about Jared than it is Aly. Jared has a lot to work through in this book, and I have to say I really liked watching Jared put himself together and try and make a life for him and Aly. I love the whole keeping relationship under wraps, not telling anyone, the kind of forbidden romance of it all. But this is more than just that. For this book, its not just a forbidden romance because the best friend will never go for it, no it’s more like forbidden because Jared doesn’t believe he is worthy of love in any way shape or form. So normally I talk about the girl first, but in the case I want to talk about Jared first, because for me, Jared was hands down my favorite character. My heart breaks for him and everything he went through, and really how haunted he is by his life. When he is young, like a fresh sixteen years old, something really tragic happens, and Jared blames himself, and frankly so do a lot of other people. I was really shocked at how many people were so okay with taking everything out on a 16 year old kid who had seriously been through a trauma, instead of reaching out and helping him they just cast him aside, making him all the more damaged. By the time he is an adult is he covered in tattoos that outline how unworthy he feels of his life. It’s so sad. When he finally comes home years later, he runs into his childhood best friend who basically demands he come and stay on his couch. […]
