Everywhere and Every Way by Jennifer Probst

I love people who start off in a book at odds with one another, and in this book, these two people were totally at odds with one another. But another great element of the book our heroes family life, and man oh man is Cal’s family life complicated. And can I just say how much I loved the whole home building and decorating aspect of this book, I am one of those people who is totally addicted to HGTV so let’s just say this theme was right up my alley. So our hero, Cal, starts off in a bad spot. His dad dies right when the book starts, and that means bring his estranged brothers back home to bury their father. They all have a seriously strained relationship with their father, so I don’t think any of them were surprised when they found out their dad changed the will to make sure that the boys run the company together and LIVE together for a year, or the million dollar company will just dissolve. Cal is determined to make sure that their family company survives their father’s last ploy to mess with them. Only that means dealing with all the drama that had been keeping the brothers apart. And there is a lot of drama going on. I liked Cal, you could tell he was a good guy who was just trying to do the business that he loves and hold things together. I don’t know if he dealt with his […]

Appealed by Emma Chase

I jumped into this series part of the way through because the blurb was just so awesome. I love the whole girl next thing, how Brent and Kennedy grew up next door to each other, it provides a lot of really great backstory for the book to pull on. Plus I also really liked the adversarial relationship between them, I mean not only do you have their past to pull from, but you also have the fact that the two of them are on the opposite sides of a court case. So I liked this book a lot, it was such a fun read for me.  I thought the best of the book though was how interesting the characters were. I mean you have Brent, who is probably one of the most confident guys ever, but he’s also complex, he’s overcome some things in his life, like losing his life, and he uses those things to push him rather that dwell on. He’s smart, as you can clearly tell when he is in the court room, but he is also a very loyal guy and friend, as you can see with the people he works with at his firm. Kennedy, on her own, is also really interesting. She’s a very well respected prosecutor, and she’s gone after some of the big names before moving back home. Now that she’s back home and Brent is back in her life, she is determined to come out on top. They didn’t exactly have […]

Dirty Past by Emma Hart

Dirty Past by Emma Hart

So apparently it’s Emma Hart week on HLB, a few days ago I read Dirty Lies, the third book in this series, and I decided I couldn’t go any further without reading the second book in the series too. So I went and bought it, and I have to say I loved the book. I mean I really loved it. I loved the first book in the series, I think because there was kind of an innocence to Sophie and Conner’s love story, but this book, Tate and Ella’s romance, there is something just so raw about it, and I loved it! So Ella comes from a high society family, and she is all set to marry the guy everyone approves of, after all she’s from a prominent Manhattan family, of course she would marry someone of the same caliber right? Except this guy is a grade A jerk (and that might be insulting to jerks everywhere). He’s an abusive guy, and Ella finally realizes she has to get out of this relationship, so she runs on her wedding day, having everything lined up to start work as the new PA for the band Dirty B. Her new life is so much different then the one she ran from. And you can tell that it is taking her a while to get used to her new circumstances. Tate comes off as rather abrasive in the beginning, so it was completely understandable that Ella still has some trouble with her past […]

Dirty Lies by Emma Hart

It’s a fairly well known fact that I love Emma Hart’s work, and I really loved the first book in the series (I did totally read this series out of order, oops). So going into this book I was prepared to spend some more time with the Burke boys of Dirty B, and meet whoever the new lady is that came into book two. So I liked Jessie right off the bat. She has the best attitude, she’s like one part sassy and one part sweet, and honestly you never know what side of her you are going to get. She has the funniest relationship with her family, the interactions between her and her little sister are hilarious, especially because her little sister is a 16 year old girl who is obsessed with Dirty B, and therefore fan girls all the time. I love the dynamic that Jessie has with her family, and even with her friends. But honestly, the best part about Jessie is the interactions she has with Aiden. They are so push and pull, they are so similar and have these huge personalities that when put together result in fireworks, and not always the super sexy type of fireworks. I like that Jessie is pretty comfortable in her own skin, and I think that really shows with the Dirty B crazies, when they start attacking her just for dating Aiden, and she handles so well, I was really impressed. Aiden is interesting for me, because he has […]

Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish

So I’ve had this book in my pile for a while, and I wanted to read it way back when I first picked it up, but then life got in the way and I forgot about it. I am so glad that I found it and gave it a go. So truth be told, I have never seen an Indiana Jones movie, but I love the idea of archeology (I was after all a history major for a while). But the idea of a disgraced archeology student turned thief just sounds like a lot of fun, especially when you add in the supernatural as well. So urban fantasy is really my first love, and I seriously enjoyed this one. One of my favorite things about the UF genre is the world building. And I have to say I love the way this book wove in the world building with the story, it didn’t feel like any one part of the book was heavy with too much information, it was more like finding out really interesting facts about the world while being in the middle of some really exciting situations. So one of the things that I both liked and found a tad bit annoying sometime is how clueless Owl sometimes seemed to be. I mean she is a really intelligent woman, she knows way more about history they I do that’s for sure, but when it comes to supernatural things, she is wildly unprepared (heck, even when she is prepared […]

Searching for Always by Jennifer Probst

I have to say I was looking forward to this book quite a bit because I really loved the previous book with Gen and Wolfe. And honestly that book really was a great set up for Arilyn and Stone, you could tell that the two of them had some serious chemistry going on between them, if only they could get past the fast that they seem to annoy each other by simply breathing. Needless to say I was totally looking forward to their story. So Arilyn is coming out of a bad relationship when this book starts, and it’s kind of a sad situation. I mean she had been with this guy for like ever, but never called him by name to his friend, and she never introduced him to anyone, she was basically a mistress except he wasn’t married. I can’t imagine what that would do to someone, being shoved aside and hidden like that. I really wanted her to find happiness with someone who wasn’t afraid to put the two of them out there. You can tell early on in the book that she is really just a good person, and anyone who rescues dogs is good in my book (after all that’s how I ended up with my six dogs). But that’s not saying that she doesn’t have traits that kind of annoy me, she’s a little to hippie for me with the chakras and vegan agenda and crystals and all that. Sorry just not my thing. […]

Facing the Music by Andrea Laurence

I thought the whole idea for this book was great, and I’m surprised I haven’t picked up a book like this before. I am one of those people who think Taylor Swift gets a bad rap for writing songs about her exes, I mean everyone writes songs about their exes, look at No Doubt, they made it big off songs Gwen wrote about her ex who was also a member of the band, I mean talk about awkward. I digress. I liked Ivy, she definitely goes for the wrong kinds of guys, which is how she ended up back in her small hometown trying to do some repair to her public image. She made it big off a song called “Size Matters” written about her ex, and while it wasn’t about the size of what was in his pants, I don’t think she minded that everyone thought it was. Although she did feel a bit bad when the media figured out it was him (can’t help but feel bad for Blake on that one). Blake hasn’t had it easy, but he has really made the best of the situation. He made a mistake when he was with Ivy and he lost her for it, and then he had to deal with the song that made her famous. And then of course his future didn’t work out when he injured himself, and that’s how he ended up back in his small town. But he seems to have made his life turn […]

Seducing Lauren by Kristen Proby

So first things first, the cover of this book almost threw me off of getting this book, but I am so glad that I read it (lesson learned mom, never judge a book by its cover). I adore this book, there were just elements in them that totally worked for me. The heroine Lauren has some secrets, which adds kind of a mystery element to her life when she interacts with other people. Plus she also has a psycho ex, and I tend to love books with psycho exes where the woman fights back, I love a woman who stands her ground and doesn’t give into a bully, and that is totally Lauren. So like I said earlier I like that Lauren is a strong girl, that she is standing up to here ex. When the story starts she is in some legal trouble with her ex-husband. Her ex-husband feels like he is entitled to pretty much anything he wants including things that only belong to Lauren. So she has to mount a legal defense. The whole book is kind of like this, her ex is constantly pushing, sometimes showing up, making her life uncomfortable, scaring her, and Lauren standing her ground and not giving in. I liked that she found work that makes her happy, and that it has really kind of move on from the jerk that was her ex. Ty is a friend of her’s who is a lawyer, and at first when she goes to him […]
