Serving Trouble by Sara Jane Stone

Second chance romance? Yes please. Slightly damaged (that might be an understatement) characters? Sign me up. This book definitely had a lot going on it, and it was one of those books that was just set up to pull on your heartstrings. You have two people who knew each other way back when coming back together in their small town after years apart. And saying that these two people had massively changed since the last time they saw each other might be the world’s biggest understatement. So Josie is back in town because she is in some serious debt. I don’t feel like I am ruining anything here by saying this, cause it’s revealed super early on in the book, but she has a rather sizable hospital bill from when her son was born premature and then passed away after 27 days. I felt for Josie, so early on in the book, no one should ever have to go through what she did, especially all alone. So Josie moved back home to live with her dad rent free and to get a job to pay off the bill. She’s doing it out of a sense of honor, one only thing she has left to show she could take care of her son, even if he is gone. So she asks Noah for a job, an old friend that she has a history with. I liked Josie, I mean she works so hard, and she’s a good person, she’s cool under […]

When We Kiss by Darcy Burke

When We Kiss by Darcy Burke

The premise for this book just seemed so heartbreaking, and frankly I like a book that tugs at my heartstrings. So this book is pretty far into the series, book five, and while you don’t need to have read the other books to read this one, I think I would recommend it (even though I didn’t) just because I feel like there is a lot of backstory going on, and the family in this book is HUGE, so there are a lot of characters to get to know and names to remember, and it might be easier if you had all the backstory from the beginning. So what I knew going into this book was that Liam had an identical twin, one who killed himself, his name was Alex. And he prepared for his death with his lawyer, Aubrey, (who he kind of duped into preparing for the worst case, she had no idea he was going to kill himself). Aubrey and Liam have one of those very passionate relationship, frankly because they are both dealing with the loss, and it’s almost like they are taking their grief and emotions out on each other. But when the book starts, it’s like a year since the two of them started secretly being each other’s convenient hookup, and Aubrey is fed up, she wants to be something more, not just someone Liam calls when he is in town to get laid. I liked Aubrey, she is really just a sweet girl, who […]

Guarding Sophie by Julie Brannagh

I don’t know why, but I really thought this was a full length book, but it was a novella, and surprisingly I enjoyed it. I am normally not a fan of novellas, but the character development in this book was pretty good and the fact that our hero and heroine knew each other going in made the whole thing just work all the better. This book is in the middle of the series, but I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything by not knowing some of the secondary characters as well as I would have if I had read the other books. So when the book starts we meet both Sophie and Kyle who are both going through some hard times in their lives. Sophie has left all her family behind and started over from scratch after leaving behind an abusive and slightly crazy ex-boyfriend. She goes from being a school teacher with strong connections to her family, to living in someones mother in law suite in a tiny town across the country from her family and is now working at a grocery store. What I liked the best about Sophie is she doesn’t spend a lot of time feeling sorry for herself, which frankly anyone would understand if she had. She’s a strong girl, she stood up for herself, she made a new life for herself, and she didn’t let herself become a shell of who she used to be. Sophie is someone I would love […]

Chaos by Jamie Shaw

I love books where you get to revisit the people from your past, especially when you happened to be in love with the guy who is suddenly in your life full time. All kinds of fun stuff for me! I love musician books, I love the whole idea of being a musician, living on the road, working hard to make your dreams come true. So Kit was head over heels in love with Shawn when she was a teenager, he’s even the reason why she picked up the guitar, and one night at a party she finally got the courage to go up and talk to him, and they had one night together, leaving her with a broken heart and his twin brother with a serious hatred for the guy. Fast forward a couple of years and she is trying out for their band, only it seems like Shawn has something against her. I liked Kit, she was definitely a girl I would be friends with. She has great style, she’s confident in her talent, and she isn’t afraid to go after her dreams. I also really loved her family dynamic, I can’t imagine growing up with that many overprotective brothers, it’s no wonder she keeps her new band gig a secret from them. Now as for Shawn, I really thought I was going to dislike him a lot more than I did, considering how his first interaction with Kit went. But honestly the situation was understandable, and they were […]

The Bride Wore Denim by Lizbeth Selvig

I really loved this book. When I picked it up to start reading it I had every intention of reading a couple of chapters and then getting some sleep. So did not work out that way, I read it in one sitting, and really enjoyed it. I love books that take place on ranches or farms, I think it’s because I’ve always wanted to end up living on a ranch with a bunch of horses in Montana. So I will point out that first off this book starts off with sadness, and throughout the course of the book this family has to deal with some serious heartache. When the book starts all of the family has returned home to bury their father, six daughters in total. I actually really loved the family aspect of this book. The relationships Harper has with her family, and also the fact that the hero in this story is also the guy who dated her sister for years. So yeah, talk about the makings for some awkward scenarios (oh and too make it worse, the sister in question seriously has some issues with Harper to begin with). So I liked Harper a lot. I honestly thought she was going to be a little bit to hippie for my liking based on some of the descriptions of her, but I really didn’t think she was all that hippie. She lives in Chicago and is basically a staving artist, but I loved that she does something she […]

Close to Heart by T.J. Kline

I kind of love the premise of this book, woman is leaving her husband and finds sanctuary in a new place she’s never been, the only hiccup in this is that this particular woman who is leaving her husband is pregnant, and I think we can all agree that kind of raises the stakes of the book. So Alyssa used to be a movie star, until she married her agent and then he slowly started to pull her away from her acting and then isolated her from all of her friends. Let’s face it the guy was a total jerk, and did I mention he was cheating on her with her best friend. Yeah real winner. So when her husband makes it clear that she can pretty much get used to the cheating or she can leave, she leaves. Only now she has to figure out how to live when she is about to have a baby, and her hubby has all the cash. I felt bad for Alyssa, and it took a while through the course of the book for her to really come to terms with what had happened with her husband. I will say I was really proud of her by the end, I think it’s a really hard thing to learn to stand on your own again and to stand up for yourself, so it was good watching her go through that and come out on the other side. Justin is the guy who rescues Alyssa […]
