I adore this book. I am a sucker for books that showcase animals, especially books that showcase people who are interested and active in rescuing or advocating for animals (especially dogs). And I loved that this book tackled the issue of fostering within it, I myself tried to foster once, it’s how we went from four dogs to six, I am not a person who can get a dog ready for its forever home, but the people who do that job, I have tons of respect for, so I loved the portrayal of how that is emotionally for a person. So when the book starts both Cara and Matt are in no place to start a relationship. Matt is about to move states away back to where he is from, and Cara is in a self-imposed no-go relationship zone (she’d been sick in the past and was determined to get to 10 years cancer free before making any kind of long term commitment). When the book starts I really felt for Cara, she’s coming home from a funeral, was bringing home a new foster in pretty bad shape, and was dealing with some serious neighbor issues. Cara has such a giving heart, and she puts every bit of her soul into rehabilitating and rehoming the boxers that come to her as fosters.
