The Natural History of Us by Rachel Harris

So this book was really not for me, I’ve Rachel Harris before and enjoyed her books, so I decided to give this book a go even though it was more YA then I normally go for. Unfortunately, I was right, this book is way to YA for me, it takes place in high school and the characters understandably have a lower maturity level and I just think I’ve gotten to a point where it harder for me to identify with high school characters. There have been a couple of YA books that I have really enjoyed, but in this book I think part of the problem was really the characters and pacing. The pacing of the book was really a big problem for me, I remember being 25-30% of the way done with the book and really nothing had happened. When she gets back home, she sees Jason, her brother’s best friend, and realizes how much he has grown up, and her childhood crush is suddenly a possibility. Only Jason has a kid, and Colby only wants a fling, which may not be the best thing for someone with a kid. I liked Colby, I liked that she had some baggage, but that she was willing to work through them, even though it was extremely difficult for her to do. I liked that she was there for her family when they needed her, but more than that I thought she was great with Emma (Jason’s daughter). Emma completely looked up to Colby, since she is a big time chef and Emma is […]
