Hold Your Breath by Katie Ruggle

I read the novella for this series a while back and I remember enjoying it, so it was an easy choice for me to pick up this book as well. I don’t know why but the idea behind the whole rescue diver thing is just super cool for me, and even better is this is cold water stuff. I don’t know about you guys but I in no way ever want to have anything to do with being under water when the water is that freezing, so already these characters are a bunch of superheroes to me. So the cool thing about this book is that it really is kind of a murder mystery with a suspenseful someone’s out to get me plot. I liked the investigative elements in this book a lot, and I liked being on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. So our heroine is Lou, and she is pretty awesome. She’s complex, she left her life behind in Connecticut to strike out on her own and really find herself and stop being under the thumb of her family. I generally don’t like novellas a whole heck of a lot, but there are a couple of exceptions, one of them being a novella to set up a new series. Enter my interest in On His Watch, the intro novella for Katie Ruggle’s new series. I read a lot of cop/law enforcement romances and I read a lot of military romances, but I haven’t really read a lot of search and rescue books, and definitely not a book about rescue divers. I have to say though the idea of rescue divers is kinda hot, makes me think of that Kevin Costner movie The Guardian. This novella was kind of the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and set up for the new series. So when the book starts we have the dive team meeting with a bunch of school kids for a presentation of what it’s like to be rescue diver. Enter a bully accepting a dare and then falling through the ice. Very quickly in the book we have a very series life and death situation for a little boy who fell through cracked ice, and let me tell ya, I was right there with our heroine Artemis, I was so worried about this poor little boy. But of course our hero, and conveniently Artemis’s ex, Derek, jumps in doing his duty as a rescue diver and saves the little boy. All is right with the world right? Uh no. Two little girls wondered off, and a snow storm is coming […]
