Behind Closed Doors by J.L. Berg

When I started reading this book, I couldn’t help but think everything sounded a bit on the familiar side. I mean I knew I was missing something, this book just reminded me too much of a book that I had real a while back, well it turns out I was right! This book is about Roman, Jude’s brother from another J.L. Berg book, Within These Walls. I really liked Within These Walls, so once I made the connection I was pretty excited about this one. So Roman is an interesting character, I felt for him. When the book starts, you see Roman as a child overhearing his father talk about how Roman is cute but dumb, and it is this one statement that really drives Roman now. He has taken over the family business, but he is angry, hostile, and lets face it unhappy guy. But in the beginning part of the book, even though I felt bad for him, I also kind of didn’t like him. I mean its clear he likes his new assistant, Cara, but he basically tries to sleep his way out of these feelings, which is kind yuck. Cara is the sweet girl from the midwest who moved to New York City, oh and move in with her high school boyfriend. I felt for this girl, I mean she went to NYC to start her life, but she really just doesn’t feel like she fits in this new life. And that’s probably because her boyfriend […]

Remembering Everly by J.L. Berg

You really should not read this book or this review if you haven’t read the first book, Forgetting August, this book without a doubt can’t be read without reading that book first. I loved Forgetting August, I mean I felt like it was really fresh and original and super interesting, the characters were compelling, and then it ended on like a big “whoa” moment. So naturally the second I finished reading Forgetting August, I preordered for this book, dying to know what was going to happen next. So a little recap is that August and Everly used to be together, August basically has amnesia after an attack. Everly is very affected by this both because he used to be her boyfriend and also because August was without a doubt emotionally abusive, like used to lock her in a room (to keep her safe). In the first book they actually get back together until the someone from August’s past shows back up and Everly leaves August and goes back to her old fiance, Ryan. And then it’s revealed at the end that August knows Everly is the one who hit him causing his coma and amnesia. It was such a set up for like a fantastic next book, I mean what is August going to do, is he going back to him callus ways and maybe blackmail her, or call the police, I mean what is going to happen. Is Everly going to fess up to Ryan what really happened between […]

Forgetting August by J.L. Berg

I have read a couple of books where one of the main characters is suffering from amnesia, and honestly some times it works and sometimes, at least for me, it falls flat. In this case, I kind of loved it. Okay, I really actually loved it completely. This book is the perfect amount of trying to figure out who someone is and who that someone was. This book was super emotional, even though one party really had no idea what had happened in his life to make it the way that it was, but man, this was a great journey to go on. Also the was this book ending, I seriously remember being super bummed that I had to wait for the next book to come out, because I wanted to devour it all in the same night. So our heroine in this story is Everly, whose name I kind of love. When the story starts its very clear that she has some emotional trauma that she is trying to move beyond. Her life is settled now though, she has a fiancee and enjoys her simple job at the coffee house and is really kind of picking up with her life and moving forward. I can’t even explain to you how much I wanted to know what had happened to her in the past, and then WHAM, her ex wakes up from his years long coma and if I thought I wanted to know what happened before, it was like […]
