Take the Bait by Cindy Dees

I really liked the idea of a book with a strong female character in a professional job. Dani is a new lawyer, just hired a well-to-do law firm in New York. She worked really hard in law school and, like everyone else, has a bunch of student loans to pay, but she is excited to be at work at the law firm, especially doing pro-bono work. Except one of the secondary plot points is that the firm has a big gender discrimination issue and only hired Dani for her “assets”. I have absolutely no problem with this story line, and it could easily work, but the author then proceeded to have Dani buy lingerie on the firm’s dime and go into some seriously misguided meetings with senior partners. I wanted to like Dani, but after the lingerie thing I was just kind of turned off. Cam as a male character isn’t bad, he’s attractive, good job, and at several points in the book he shows his true colors as a good guy. He stands up for Dani whenever possible, and just in general was an pretty decent guy. I was a tad worried at the beginning that he was going to come off as some predatory jerk, but I was pleasantly surprised. Another secondary plot point has to do with Dani’s client wanting to stay in jail. The author talks about it throughout the entire book, because Dani and Cam are on opposite sides of the case.
