My name is Roman Cavenaugh and I’m kind of an asshole. Running a company isn't easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory. I don't have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didn’t see her coming.Cara Hamilton—she was supposed to be off limits…a temporary employee brought in during my assistant’s maternity leave. But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more. An obsession I couldn’t shake.
So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine. All’s fair in love and war…

When I started reading this book, I couldn’t help but think everything sounded a bit on the familiar side. I mean I knew I was missing something, this book just reminded me too much of a book that I had real a while back, well it turns out I was right! This book is about Roman, Jude’s brother from another J.L. Berg book, Within These Walls. I really liked Within These Walls, so once I made the connection I was pretty excited about this one.

So Roman is an interesting character, I felt for him. When the book starts, you see Roman as a child overhearing his father talk about how Roman is cute but dumb, and it is this one statement that really drives Roman now. He has taken over the family business, but he is angry, hostile, and lets face it unhappy guy. But in the beginning part of the book, even though I felt bad for him, I also kind of didn’t like him. I mean its clear he likes his new assistant, Cara, but he basically tries to sleep his way out of these feelings, which is kind yuck.

Cara is the sweet girl from the midwest who moved to New York City, oh and move in with her high school boyfriend. I felt for this girl, I mean she went to NYC to start her life, but she really just doesn’t feel like she fits in this new life. And that’s probably because her boyfriend seems determined to turn her into something she isn’t. I really did not like her boyfriend. I really did like how Roman was so adamant about Cara being true to herself and not to let her boyfriend change her, I think that was honestly the very thing she needed to here.

When Cara and Roman finally get together, man those two really know how to heat up the pages. But I really do love them together, they were are so good for each other. Even though Roman tries so hard to come off as a jerk, he really is a good guy when it comes to Cara. These two may be polar opposites but they compliment each other so well.

I do I have to say I liked this book, it was a good story, and I enjoyed the writing (I will admit that I liked Within These Walls more, but this was a great addition to Berg’s collection of work). I would easily recommend this book to anyone, I love workplace romance, and this one was just a fun read for me.

About J.L. Berg

I’m a California native, who lives in the South – Virginia to be exact. I still prefer sushi to fried chicken, avocados to okra, and I absolutely loathe humidity. I do love watching the seasons change though. My husband and I have been here for ten years, and I still get giddy like a school girl every time it snows.

I’m married to my high school sweetheart. We were married young, barely out of high school. Everyone told us we were crazy and stupid. We’ll be celebrating 12 years of marriage this year, and I love him more every single day. We’re living proof that true love knows no age limit.

I’m absolutely obsessed with romance novels (duh) and probably could have built a vacation home with the amount of money I’ve invested in them over the years. Romance novels take you to another place, making your heart race, emotions swell, passion run free. After so many years of meeting hundreds of fictional characters and discovering their worlds, I found myself creating my own.
