So if you have read this first book in the series, you could kind of guess that the second book was going to be about Ranger and Amy. Although you kind of new it was going to be a hard relationship, and more than a little heartbreaking. So in the first book, a member of Ranger’s secret military task force died, and he happened to be Ranger’s best friend and Amy’s husband. Of course Ranger has been harboring his feelings for Amy for a super long time, but he was always respectful of his friend’s marriage, except now he is gone…
So Amy is so heartbreaking to read. She is really broken at the beginning of the book, actually that might be wrong, she’s more like frozen. She’s decided not to engage in any of her feelings about the death of her husband, or the fact that Shane never knew about their daughter Chloe, let alone got the chance to meet her. Amy is just going through the motions, it’s been months since her husband died, and she still can’t open herself up emotionally. The problem is she has always had feelings for Ranger, and she doesn’t want to feel like she is betraying her husband’s memory, also Shane’s mother is a vile woman who has made numerous threats, so Amy doesn’t want to rock the boat, especially because of Chloe. I liked Amy, there are few moments where I worried she was going to be a weak character, but man does she always pull it out in the end. She’s really a good person, an honorable and loyal person, and no one should ever have to go through what she did (especially at the end).
So Ranger, oh sweet Ranger. I loved how he fought for Amy at every turn. Amy was so convinced he was going to take off, but Ranger was always there. And the way he is with Chloe, and Artie (when he comes into the picture), I’m sorry but a hot guy who is good with kids is like my version of perfection. I loved that he was a super capable guy, with a really big heart. I love how two kids who aren’t related to him in any way captured his heart so quickly. He’s good at his job, and quick to protect those who need him.
I also really loved seeing the characters from the first book, and I can’t wait to see who is up next in the series. The new sheriff, Bo, seems to have an interesting backstory that I am for sure interested in. I like the continuation of the storyline with the first book, so I’m looking forward to see how it continues in the third, I mean there is so much more I could say, but I don’t want to ruin the ending for you guys. The pacing is good, the story was suspenseful, and the romance was hot.
