So this book appealed to me for a couple of reason: I love books with military guys (they are just super hot and I love a guy who can handle himself and protect the people he cares about), I really like books with a thriller/suspense element to it, I love books where the main characters have a past together, especially when that relationship didn’t end on the best of terms, and lastly, I love books where there is an element of revenge involved.
So when the book starts its seriously kind of heartbreaking. Hunter is our hero and he is a member of a special ops teams, and in the middle of a mission he ends up losing one of his guys, and you can tell the whole thing is just so hard for him. Especially since he was injured and he can’t go back out to look for his guy. So while he is recovering, half of his team gets sent back to Hunter’s hometown, there is intel saying the attack and the weapons smuggling they were investigating is coming from back there, and omg his ex might be involved. When the book starts, Hunter has a lot of anger built up, and he isn’t really looking forward to spending time with Evie, but he is looking forward to getting some kind of payback on her, on taking her down, both for justice as well as kind of payback for her cheating on him. I actually liked Hunter, you could tell he was going through a really hard experience, but at the same time he has a really good heart. I loved how quick he reacted to things, and even better he was so appealing when he was all physical and take charge.
Evie, oh sweet Evie, now if there is anyone to feel bad for it’s her. She was totally in love with Hunter, and he left her without warning. If that wasn’t bad enough the next guy she dating was literally scum of the earth, who was beyond abusive to her. Poor Evie is scared of her own shadow sometimes, she wants to stand on her own, she wants to stand up for herself and her family, but she has some serious anxiety issues left over from what he ex did to her. I was really glad to read her evolution, she starts off the book in such an almost meek place, and then by the end of the book I am so impressed with how she is willing to stand up and fight for herself and her family.
There is a lot to be said about the story, and a lot of it I don’t want to talk about in a review because it might ruin thing for people. There is a serious thriller aspect to this book, it doesn’t take place over a long period of time, it’s actually a pretty short time period, but the pace is super fast and high drama. Once you get wrapped up into this book, it’s hard to step out of it, you really want to know what is going to happen next. All in all I think this was a good start to the series, and I am very excited to read the next in the series.
