Keyboardist Kyle Cross may look like a bad boy with his tattoos and piercings, but he’s really the good guy who’s always stuck fixing his band’s problems and never gets the girl. His band is competing in a college Battle of the Bands, but when their bassist doesn't show, Kyle must track her down with the help of the person he least expects: his ex-girlfriend Alexis Monroe.
Kyle hasn’t seen Alexis since she dumped him in high school, and she’s dropped her preppy image for fiery red hair and a bold new attitude to match. With only hours before his band goes on stage, Kyle has to be a little bad if he wants to win both the Battle and the girl he's never gotten over. But when their old problems resurface, the good guy might just get his heart broken all over again.
So this book was really cute, had some hot and steamy, some drama, and was just a fun read in general. I normally don’t really like the whole novella thing, but I do make exceptions. One of those exceptions is when it comes to novellas that are there to set up a series, and this novella is doing just that. Plus I really liked the synopsis and the cover, so this was an easy buy for me.
So this whole novella takes place over a couple of hours one night at a Battle of the Bands, USC versus UCLA. Kyle is there with his band, which is made of his brother Jared, Jared’s best friend Hector, and the missing in action Becca. As it turns out Kyle’s brother is a bit of a horndog which has caused Becca to go MIA. Kyle being the good guy he is realizes if they have any shot of competing in this battle he has got to find Becca. Only while he is looking for Becca he runs into the girl who broke his heart several years ago, Alexis.
So since the book is super short, I don’t want to give too much away. So what I will say is that I liked Kyle, I liked that he is just a good guy in general, but he also is kinda learning to stand up for himself. I liked that he loves his brother fiercely, it seems like the two of them have a strong bond (an a big backstory there). I will admit to liking Kyle more than Alexis but that might be because the whole thing is told from Kyle’s POV. Alexis seems like a girl who has spent a lot of time trying to figure out where she fits in and who she really is. I like that she is confident in herself, seems like more than was before when she was dating Kyle. I liked the two of them together in general. There is a jerk in this short story, but I will leave you guys to experience him on your own, cause he really is a grade A jerk, but makes the story a little bit more interesting with his antics.
All in all this was a pretty good set up for a series and a good fast read for me. If you like hot, tattooed musicians and second chance romances in new adult, or are just looking for a quick novella to read, you might want to check out this one.
