Eleven months ago, bartender and weird-shirt-wearing extraordinaire Roxy and Officer Reece Anders had a one night stand. Well, kind of. She’s been in love with him since she was fifteen, and he wishes that night they shared never happened. She’s sworn him off forever, but the past and future collide, forcing her to rely on the one man who broke her heart not once, but twice.
Her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime years ago, and the person who put him in there is out of prison and wanting to make amends with him and Roxy. She’s not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence, she thinks she knows who is to blame. The man who already destroyed one life already.
But Reece isn’t convinced. The threats are too personal, and even if Roxy doesn’t believe him, he’s not willing to let anyone hurt her. Including himself. He’s already messed up more than once when it comes to Roxy and he’s not going to let history repeat itself.
This book was great for me! I can remember reading it at 4am and telling myself I really should be going to sleep and just never getting around to putting the book down. I really seem to enjoy books where the main characters have some kind of history that has pulled them apart for some reason and watching the two of them work their ways back to each other.
Roxy is totally someone I would want to be friends with if I met her in real life. She has a great personality for sure. She works at a bar, and I have to say I love some of the scenes where she is at work, she has awesome people around her in her life, and I honestly enjoyed reading all the scenes they were in. So when the book starts up Roxy and Reece aren’t exactly in a good place, he thinks they slept together, and well she knows the truth. It makes for some awkwardness at first. Another thing Roxy is dealing with is that her best friend is in a permanent care living facility, and the guy who put him there is now out of prison.
Reece is a cop, and just in general all around good guy. For me honestly, Roxy makes the book, but Reece is a great hero to her heroine. He is all man, alpha guy, military vet, who goes into full force protection mode whenever anything threatens Roxy. He’s just an all around stand up guy, and when you put him and Roxy together the chemistry is awesome. These two really make it so easy to fall right into the story.
And here comes the mystery element. Some weird stuff is happening to Roxy and around Roxy’s house. At first it’s just little things, like things that are in the wrong place in her apartment, and at first it is really easy for Roxy to just think she just put something in the wrong place or maybe that she has a ghost in her apartment or something. But then things start getting out of control and she starts to realize way more is going on then she thought really is. Of course she thinks its the guy who is responsible for putting her best friend in the hospital for the rest of his life, but Reece, well Reece isn’t so sure. I actually really loved the mystery part of the book, it made all the interpersonal relationships all the more exciting and the build up all the more interesting. I have to say that by the end of the book I was both surprised and sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next.
I really enjoyed this book, and I think just about anyone who likes a romance with a bit of mystery in it would enjoy reading this book as well. I have read this authors books before and I can say without a doubt I will read them again, and with all honesty I will probably re-read this book sometime soon.
