Emmaline Neal needs a date. Just a date—someone to help her get through her ex-fiancé's wedding without losing her mind. But pickings are slim in Manningsport, New York, population 715. In fact, there's really only one option: local heartthrob Jack Holland. Everyone loves Jack, and he won't get the wrong idea…. After all, Jack Holland would never actually be interested in a woman like Em. Especially not with his beautiful ex-wife creeping around, angling to reunite ever since he rescued a group of teens and became a local hero.
But when the wedding festivities take an unexpectedly passionate turn, Em figures it was just one crazy night. Jack is too gorgeous, too popular, to ever end up with her. So why is she the one he can talk to about his deep, dark feelings? If Em is going to get her dream man, she'll have to start by believing in him…
I adore Kristan Higgins, she is hands down without a doubt one of my favorites. This was my first book I have read in the Blue Heron series, and it’s definitely a stand alone, so you can read this without having read any of the other books in the series. I thought this was going to be an interesting book, mainly because the premise of going to your ex-fiance’s wedding, just doesn’t seem like something I would ever want to do. I mean seriously, just seems like a bad time to me.
So Emmaline is trying desperately to find a date to take with her to this wedding. And someone suggests that she take Jack with her, the all around nice guy in town. Apparently he’s done this kind of thing before. Emmaline doesn’t really even want to go to this wedding, but the groom’s family is still friends with her family, and her family is going to be at the wedding, her family that seems to overanalyze her, and really don’t do a great job and making her feel good about herself.
Emmaline isn’t the only one dealing with issues, Jack is also dealing with some heavy stuff. He’s had a divorce in his past that I think has kind of messed him up on relationships. And on top of that he also is suffering from a bit of a case of PTSD after a rescuing some kids out of serious car accident.
These two seem to be a bit of an unlikely pair. But Emmaline has been harboring a crush for Jack for a while now. I loved the scenes in the wedding vacation. Jack is always there for Emmaline during the events, even in some uncomfortable positions (some pretty hilarious ones too). Another great thing about this trip is that Emmaline and Jack seem to be able to show each other the parts of themselves that they hide from other people. But when they get back home and Jack’s ex is back in town and desperate for another chance, things suddenly become way more complicated.
These two are super cute, and there is so much push and pull between them. I really liked that it was exactly easy for them to figure things out, and I thought the fact that both people’s exes were in this book made for a really interesting read, and super fun. This is another good book from Kristan Higgins, and I am looking forward to reading more of this series. I would check it out.
