An exotic wildlife preserve is a dream come true for conservation biologist Daniela Flores. Until she finds out her ex-husband is leading the research team. World-famous shark expert Sean Carmichael has only grown more ruggedly appealing in the time they were apart...the passion between them more intense than ever. But how could Daniela forgive Sean for betraying her when she needed him most?Sean had come to the remote Farallon Islands to study killer sharks. Now a real killer is on the loose, threatening the woman he's never stopped loving. And this time, he knows he can't walk away. Marooned together during a deadly storm, Sean vows to go to hell and back to save Daniela...and for the chance to begin again.
I have to admit that I love second chance romances, even more so when the couple in question used to be married, I don’t know why but I love it when two people who used to be married can find the way back to each other, especially when its clear that the two people in question were truly in love with each other. This book fit perfectly into that, not just that though it had a great element of mystery to it that I really enjoyed and I’m a sucker for anyone who holds animals close to their hearts, so this book was an easy sell for me.
So Daniela and Sean got divorced after a seriously horrible tragedy befell them and they were unable to deal with it. It’s a heartbreaking situation, and there truly are no bad guys in this situation, which makes it all the more easy to pull for these two to be able to find their way back to each other. The two of them hadn’t seen each other since the divorce but they both end up on the same remote island doing research (her work is with sea lions and his with sharks). It’s clear from the beginning that the two of them are uncomfortable with the situation, and in the beginning I totally didn’t like how adamant Sean was that Daniela not be allowed to stay on island. I understand that he was trying to look out for her, but I didn’t like it at all. Wanted to shake him, but again it was understandable.
There were several really great moments in this book, and not just between Daniela and Sean. There is this great moment between Daniela and a baby sea lion who was injured and she works very hard to save, even puts herself in danger to do so. It was actually a really powerful scene. I actually found that all of the scenes where the researchers on the island were working with animals were really well done and some were quite powerful.
There is also a bit of suspense and mystery within this book. Strange things are happening on the island, and everyone on the island is in some serious danger, only they have no idea where it is coming from. It takes a second to figure out who the person responsible for it all is, and when I finally figured out who the person responsible was I felt a lot of different things about, sad for the person as well as angry for the lengths they were willing to go to to hurt other people.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read, it was a great combination of second chance romance (with awesome chemistry), love of animal, and some decent suspense/mystery thrown in for good measure too. I have a feeling I will be looking for more books by Jill Sorenson in the future, but in the meantime I think you guys should check out this book.
