Fighting for someone’s heart is more challenging than fighting for a title.
For a time, many years ago, love had grown, love was made, and in the end … love was lost. The decision to leave had been the worst mistake Shelby Dawson could have ever made. However, at the time—ten years ago—she felt her secret needed to stay hidden, even if it broke her heart and the heart of the man she loved. Back then, he was all hers and she was all his, but now things have changed and he isn’t the same guy she knew.
He happens to be the well-known MMA Heavyweight champion and famous bad boy, Matt ‘The Destroyer’ Reynolds, who once before struggled to help his family pay the bills. Now, he has money flowing with each undefeated win and an insurmountable number of women filling his bed. Everything is perfect for the illustrious fighter, until one day it all changes. In walks the girl from his past, the same girl who promised to stick by him but left and never looked back.
Their second chance to make things right will not come easy, for when one mistake is made an unwelcome consequence soon follows. Someone out there wants to rip them apart and they won’t stop until Matt and Shelby pay the ultimate price … their love.
This book revolved around a theme I really like in romance books, second chances, two exes finding their way back to each other. Shelby and Matt’s story has all the elements you want in a romance book, steamy heat, tragic pasts, and a villain to defeat. I actually enjoyed this book, it was an easy read, and I enjoyed how everything ended.
I liked Shelby, she had a really nice, likable quality about her. I liked that she was intelligent and educated, and was able to hold her own when a man tried to bully her into things. I liked that she was strong, emotionally, she had a big tragedy in her past that could have easily ruined her, but she carried on, and made something out of her life, and I have a lot of respect for that. Although I don’t always agree with Shelby’s decisions, here best guy friend and I are on the same page about a lot of Shelby’s decisions, I do understand them, and I sympathize with her.
Matt was a great hero, he definitely comes off as a good looking, very strong, and capable man. I liked that he just went for things he wanted. When Shelby comes back into his life, he doesn’t hesitate, he follows her when she runs away. He does a bit of a control issue when the book starts, he gets egged on by people, and has a hard time keeping his anger in check. But thankfully, Matt learns to control himself as the book continues on, and he really proves himself to have a good head on his shoulders.
The villain in the story is kind of an awesome villain, you seriously start to hate him to moment he makes himself know. Kyle is seriously a guy I would want to punch in the face, and thankfully that is exactly what Shelby does at some point. Kyle is one of Matt’s opponents, a fellow MMA fighter, and to say he plays dirty would probably be a big understatement. He really is a great villain, and as the book goes on you can’t help but wonder if there is someone else he is working with, which makes it all the more exciting to read.
I would easily recommend this book to anyone who likes a romance about two exes finding their way back to each other. I know there are a lot of people who like books with an MMA/fighting theme, and I think this one does a pretty good job with that theme.
